Further information

Splined shafts transmit the rotary shaft movement directly and positively to the hub element with comparatively little wear. The splined profile creates the conditions for a precise fit of the shaft in the internally profiled sleeve and for the absorption of shock loads. Torque is transmitted via the contact surfaces on the splined sides. The comparatively large contact surfaces engaged allow the reliable transmission of high torques.

Fits

When referring to fits, the distinction is made between clearance fits, transition fits and interference fits. The key parameters for creating these fits are spline width, root diameter and outside diameter.

Materials for splined shafts

G&G splined shafts are manufactured either from heat-treated steel C45 or stainless steel VA 1.4301. On request, they are also available as custom-made products from 42CrMo4. We can supply you with large and medium quantities as well as individual items. Please contact us at contact(at)gg-antriebstechnik.de. Naturally, matching splined hubs and splined shaft sleeves are also available for each splined shaft series.

Standards for splined shafts

The standard ISO 14 describes dimensions, tolerances and verification for splined shaft connections with straight flanks and internal centring.

The requirements for splines with splined flanks are listed in DIN 5464. As C standards, i.e. industry-specific standards, DIN 5471 and 5472 specify the dimensions of splined shaft profiles and splined hub profiles with 4 or 6 splines and internal centring. SAE J499 and SAE J501 apply to splined profiles and shaft ends in accordance with American standards.

Production

Splined shaft profiles are manufactured by milling, grinding, cold drawing or shaping.
