Trapezoidal threaded spindles for your drive solution

Drive solutions with a trapezoidal threaded spindle and trapezoidal threaded nut are used wherever a rotary motion must be converted into linear motion. They are primarily used for linear fastening and clamping applications as well as for manual or motorised adjustment devices. In trapezoidal screw drives, the threaded nut moves linearly on the trapezoidal threaded spindle at slow to medium speed and allows the transmission of large axial forces. The trapezoidal thread profile of the spindle and nut favours the self-locking effect of threaded drives. The ratio of the spindle diameter and the thread pitch is decisive here.

Information on trapezoidal threaded spindles

Manufacturing process

G&G supplies rolled trapezoidal threaded spindles as standard from stock. We can produce whirled spindles to order for you based on drawings.

The rolling of thread profiles refers to non-cutting production by cold forming. In this process, the profile is rolled into the surface of the starting material. The grain flow of the starting material is not interrupted in this process. The result is a homogeneous material structure with a wear-resistant, press-polished, smooth flank surface. The mechanical properties achieved are significantly better compared to other manufacturing processes, in particular the tensile strength. Compared to whirled spindles, the surface hardness of a rolled thread spindle is up to 30% higher and the breaking strength up to 12% higher. Thread rolling is an economically attractive option for medium and large quantities.

Whirled spindles are used when special threads and/or special pitches with high demands on pitch accuracy and dimensional stability are required. Whirled spindles are produced by cutting.

Materials

A wide range of materials is available for the manufacture of trapezoidal screw drives. The G&G stock and product range includes trapezoidal threaded spindles made of steel (C35 / C45) and stainless steel (1.4404). The stainless steel selected for you contains no sulphur and is therefore particularly suitable for applications requiring resistance to salt water and acids and likewise for use in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Trapezoidal threaded nuts are available in steel (11SMnPb37), gunmetal (CuSn7ZnPb) and plastic (PA 6.6). Plastic nuts are used when special running characteristics are required in combination with low noise emissions.

Product range

G&G Antriebstechnik supplies standard trapezoidal threaded spindles from stock in a rolled design with spindle diameters from 10 mm to 120 mm and lengths of up to 3000 mm. Lengths of up to 6000 mm are possible on request with diameters starting from 30 mm. Trapezoidal thread drives are available in both single-start and multi-start designs with different pitches, as well as with right-hand threads and left-hand threads. G&G spindles are manufactured to tolerance class 7e. All spindles and nuts comply with the dimensions and requirements of DIN 103.

G&G offers custom-made products in various materials and qualities based on both drawings and samples. Trapezoidal threaded spindles and trapezoidal threaded nuts pre-machined for immediate installation complete our range of products and services.

Lubrication

Trapezoidal screw drives require regular maintenance and lubrication. The tribological pairing of steel (TR screw) with steel (TR nut) poses the risk of cold welding or galling, especially under high mechanical stress. For loaded trapezoidal screw drives and/or those in continuous operation, a combination of steel (spindle) and bronze (nut) is recommended due to the more favourable wear properties. TR nuts made of gunmetal have good emergency running characteristics in the event of inadequate lubricant. Combinations with plastic nuts do not require lubrication – these are maintenance-free and low-noise.
